Native regrowth forest management PFT Tree Alliance

More than 60 people attended Private Forests Tasmania's native forest regrowth thinning field days in Levendale and Sassafras this week, held in partnership with Midway Tasmania.

At John Dart's property at Levendale, we learned how thinning his 50-year-old regrowth native forest has improved forest health and productivity, enhanced carbon capture, generated valuable wood products and supported biodiversity

At Sassafras, the properties of Dallas and Scott Rockliffe and Andrew Marshall showcased their native forest sites, demonstrating how their mixed farming operation balances immediate income generation through thinning, future goals for high-value timber production and long-term sustainability in vegetable growing, cattle production, and forestry.

PFT CEO Elizabeth Pietrzykowski said both days were filled with insightful discussions, practical demonstrations, and inspiring stories of how native forest thinning can align with economic and environmental goals.

"Your engagement reflects the commitment of Tasmania's landowners to embrace innovative forestry practices that benefit both their operations and the environment," she said.

"Thank you to speakers Tony Price, Jarrod Burn, John Dart, Andrew Marshall, Lyndon O'Neil, Airon Denwer-Ripper and Michael Schofield who provided insights into native regrowth forest silviculture, traditional land management and cool burning and the forestry operations carried out on these three-case study properties.

"PFT last year invested significant resources to produce a suite of communication and education resources designed to assist forest owners to successfully plan and carry out active management for beneficial outcomes."

The resource package includes videos which showcase successful management of private native regrowth forests, fact sheets on relevant topics, a detailed guide to native regrowth forest operations and case studies demonstrating how active management techniques are being applied to achieve various land management and financial objectives in five private native regrowth forests.

These resources and more are available on PFT's website and our Tree Alliance Knowledge Hub.
