Incentivising Tasmanian farmers in the establishment of new commercial tree plantings

Stems for CO2 Program

The Stems for COâ‚‚ 2024 Grant Program is supported by the Tasmanian Government through Renewables, Climate and Future Industries Tasmania (ReCFIT). It assists landowners with upfront establishment costs to integrate trees into productive agricultural landscapes.

The program promotes commercial tree plantings that deliver carbon abatement, improve farm productivity, enhance water quality and biodiversity, reduce soil erosion, and create a future wood resource. It also supports community education around the multiple benefits of trees on farms.

Applications closed in March 2024, with three successful landowners awarded a share of $442,000 in grant funding.

Planting is scheduled to begin in Winter 2025.

Landscape Scale Demonstration Sites Program

(Integrated Farm Forestry Demonstration Sites – Round 1)

Led by Private Forests Tasmania and co-funded by the Australian Government through the Smart Farming Grants, this program supported the integration of shelterbelts and woodlots into working farms across Tasmania.

The initiative aimed to showcase best-practice, landscape-scale tree planting that delivers multiple on-farm benefits — from improved productivity and shelter to environmental resilience.

Applications closed in June 2020, with seven successful projects awarded a total of $600,000 in grant funding.

Trees on Farms Program

(Integrated Farm Forestry Demonstration Sites – Round 2)

The Trees on Farms Program, delivered by Private Forests Tasmania, supported farmers to establish new commercial tree plantings that contribute to a carbon-neutral economy.

Planting the right trees in the right place can boost farm productivity, improve water use and quality, enhance carbon outcomes, protect the land for future generations, and produce high-value timber.

In Round 2, six successful applicants shared in $600,000 of grant funding. Applications closed in February 2022.
