Frequently asked questions about the Tree Alliance

The Tree Alliance is a growing community of Tasmanian farmers and landowners who agree that managing trees on farms is a win-win for the environment, society and sustainability.

It is a people driven-community with a simple purpose – to bring together like-minded farmers and landowners across Tasmania who support trees on farms.

Private Forests Tasmania facilitates the Tree Alliance community.

You might remember the Tree Alliance differently to a community of Tasmanian farmers and landowners who support trees on farms.

Private Forests Tasmania has taken the opportunity in 2025 to refocus the Tree Alliance initiative with the aim to provide stronger value for Tasmanian farmers and landowners.

The Tree Alliance has evolved and grown considerably since it first began in 2020, and until late 2024, was focused on raising awareness of farm forestry and providing advice, information and tools to encourage farmers to plant trees on their land.

An important part of PFT’s value proposition is to facilitate and expand the development of the private forest resource in Tasmania and this includes making available and sharing information and resources.

PFT recognises in the past there has been some crossover with the work it does and the previous objectives and deliverables of the Tree Alliance.

PFT has decided the Tree Alliance can provide more value with a stronger focus on community, sharing on-farm stories about the benefits of managing trees on farms and so that PFT can facilitate opportunities for farmers and landowners to build connections with other like-minded people.

The ‘old’ Tree Alliance will become part of history. Hopefully, ‘old’ Tree Alliance members who are Tasmanian farmers or landowners renew their membership under the new chapter.

The resources which were located on the Tree Alliance website – including the ‘topics’ – are now available for viewing on the Private Forests Tasmania website under the ‘Resources’ tab.

The Knowledge Hub, which was located on the Tree Alliance website is now available on the Private Forests Tasmania website under the ‘Tools’ tab.

Are eligible to be Tree Alliance members. In addition, any Tasmanian farmer or landowner on properties greater than five hectares in size intending to plant and manage trees (as above) are also eligible to be Tree Alliance members.

Most importantly, Tree Alliance members understand and have an appreciation of the multiple benefits of managing trees on farms.

The Tree Alliance is facilitated by Private Forests Tasmania. This includes Private Forests Tasmania making available the resources and costs to run the Tree Alliance – providing a free membership but making available gate signage, an annual event invitation and a quarterly storybook.

If you sign up to be a Tree Alliance member, you will receive:

  • Gate signage to install on your property highlighting your membership to the Tree Alliance;
  • An invitation to an annual networking event to engage with other Tree Alliance members; and
  • A quarterly Tree Alliance storybook – to be posted in the mail every three months.

Yes, it is free to join the Tree Alliance.

If you become a Tree Alliance member, Private Forests Tasmania would be appreciative of your being involved in the Tree Alliance actively by putting up your free gate sign, reading the quarterly storybook, and attending the annual networking event.

It would be appreciated if Tree Alliance members who find the community rewarding could share this with their peers, encourage them to become members and to sign up. It would also be helpful for members to share their stories about the benefits of their experiences in managing trees on farms.

No, Tree Alliance and Private Forests Tasmania are not the same thing. Tree Alliance is facilitated by Private Forests Tasmania.

An important part of PFT’s value proposition is to facilitate and expand the development of the private forest resource in Tasmania and this includes making available and sharing information and resources.

PFT recognises in the past there has been some crossover with the work it does and the previous objectives and deliverables of the Tree Alliance.

The Tree Alliance has shifted its focus in 2025 because PFT has decided the Tree Alliance can provide more value with a stronger focus on community, sharing on-farm stories about the benefits of managing trees on farms and so that PFT can facilitate opportunities for farmers and landowners to build connections with other like-minded people.

Yes, the Tree Alliance is different now to what it used to be.

The Tree Alliance initiative has been around for more than five years and has evolved throughout this time. Most recently, it had grown to include members and partners of lots of different industries and backgrounds (not just forestry and agriculture) and to cover a very broad and diverse range of forestry (technical and non-technical).

Farmers and landowners in Tasmania on properties greater than five hectares who are currently managing trees (or intend to) including:

  • Native forest
  • Softwood plantations
  • Hardwood plantations
  • Shelterbelts
  • Woodlots
  • Environmental plantings
  • Special species timber plantings

Are eligible to be Tree Alliance members.

Yes, it is Tasmanian farmers or landowners managing property greater than five hectares in size.

Private Forests Tasmania welcomes supporters of the Tree Alliance initiative. Tree Alliance supporters can share the word about the Tree Alliance community and encouraging Tasmanian farmers and landowners they know who support trees on farms to become members.

Private Forests Tasmania is interested in continuing its relationship with ‘old’ Tree Alliance partners and is excited to identify and explore opportunities to collaborate and work together on various initiatives with mutually beneficial outcomes. However, these future partnerships and opportunities will be between Private Forests Tasmania and the respective businesses, not Tree Alliance.

If you are a Tasmanian farmer or landowner, you can be actively involved in the Tree Alliance by becoming a member and engaging with the Tree Alliance content – putting up your free gate signage on your property, reading your quarterly storybook, and attending the annual networking event.

If you would like to be further involved, Private Forests Tasmania would be grateful for your sharing the word about the Tree Alliance community and encouraging your fellow Tasmanian farmers and landowners who support trees on farms to become members.

The Tree Alliance annual events are intended to be held on members properties. Private Forests Tasmania is open to considering hosting a future Tree Alliance annual event at your property, however, please consider whether your property and facilities would be suitable to such an event.

Properties with large indoor space capability (up to 150 people) and commercial kitchens will be preference to best allow for enjoyable, safe and resourceful networking events.

When you sign up to Tree Alliance you will receive 1 gate sign for free. If you would like more than 1 gate sign, contact admin@pft.tas.gov.au and request additional signage. There is likely to be a cost involved for a second gate sign.

The gate signs are made of a corflute material. Corflute is a lightweight, durable plastic sheet commonly used for signage. It is weather resistant and recyclable.

It is recommended by Private Forests Tasmania that Tree Alliance members erect their gate signage on their property gate.

Private Forests Tasmania aims to deliver all Tree Alliance gate signs to members within two months of their membership being confirmed.

Private Forests Tasmania will develop and deliver by mail the Tree Alliance storybook each quarter. There will be a summer, autumn, winter and spring edition, delivered at the conclusion of each season.

It is anticipated the first Tree Alliance storybook will be posted to members before the end of January 2026.

*Note: For example, if you sign up as a member in June 2026, you will only have access to Tree Alliance storybooks from winter 2026.

The annual Tree Alliance networking event will be held in the first half of the calendar year. This may be subject to change dependent on Private Forests Tasmania adapting to locate a time/month each year most suited to the event.

It is anticipated the first annual Tree Alliance networking event will be held between February and March 2026.

Institutional forest growers cannot be members of the Tree Alliance. Tree Alliance membership as part of its new chapter is reserved for Tasmanian farmers and landowners managing trees on farms.
