Species, sites and planting Carbon benefits

Private Forests Tasmania and the Forest Education Foundation hosted 21 students from Bothwell District High School at St Peters Pass in early August, where farmer Dougal Morrison and his family own and manage an 8,000-hectare wool and forestry enterprise.

he day included classroom sessions in the property’s Shearers Quarters where students learned about the complexity of carbon cycles and look at the values of trees on farms for productivity, biodiversity, soil health and water quality.

Dougal spoke to the students about the integration of forestry into his other farming operations.

The students then ventured onto the farm to explore and identify the different types of trees and forests on the property and learned how to measure trees and estimate the amount of carbon they store.

It was a fun day out to talk about and explore the various benefits of planting trees on farms!
