Join Private Forests Tasmania for an insightful visit to a native forest regrowth thinning site at Levendale, where the process of sustainable forest management is underway.
The Levendale property, located on the Coal River in southeast Tasmania, is owned by John Dart, a large-scale beef producer and seasoned private forest investor. This visit will offer a unique opportunity to explore the long-term benefits of thinning regrowth native forests, including ecological, carbon, and economic gains.
You will hear from industry experts and landowners about the process of thinning and its positive impacts. Midway Tasmania will present the detailed planning and harvesting stages, and John Dart will share his experience managing the Levendale site, which features both plantation and native regrowth forests.
Event Details:
Levendale Site Overview: The Levendale thinning coupe is part of a 120-hectare native regrowth forest on moderate terrain. The forest, comprising dry Eucalyptus species, is being thinned to improve tree growth rates and forest health, with long-term goals of producing high-value wood products. Thinning here also enhances carbon sequestration and biodiversity, particularly near the adjacent Mount Ponsonby Conservation Area. Wildlife protection zones and stream protections are in place to safeguard habitats for species like the Spotted-tail quoll, Eastern quoll, and Tasmanian devil. Learn more HERE.
